Where is the sound coming from?
Did you all know that Harley Davidson once tried to trademark its very trademark sound? When I first read about it, it just fascinated me as a normal ‘aspiring but will never buy’ consumer of Harleys. But the importance of sound in our day to day products really stuck with me. When I entered product management, like all too-much-free-time PMs, I started noticing the value of sound elements in our day to day products - for ex the Macbook keyboard or the imessage or the phone ringtone - we all differentiate products basis sound in many ways.
Sound plays an important role in many day to day applications- whether it is to indicate an action, or a competed state or just sound out a warning. I have never worked with any product with element of sound, but would love to someday. If you have do put it the comments on how your experience was.
Today’s article is on the science of UI sound design, and like its content - it is available as a podcast as well. You can go through either, my personal preference has always been reading.
